Vaticano

Original place where the Apostel Petrus was buried near the location of a Roman circus created by emperor Nero, the old St. Peter's Basilica was erected by emperor Konstantin I in 318. The Pope Nicholas V decided to move the Holy See from the Lateran palace to the Vatican hills and established the first papal residence. He also created the Papal library and planned for the creation of further buildings. Key buidings are the Sistine Chapel, the Raphael Rooms, the Borgia Apartments, the Clementine Hall and the famous Vatican Museum. Vatican city is a souverain state, also important churches belonging to the Bishop of Rome are extraterritorial parts of the Vatican.
During the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, the Vatican museum could be visited without reservation and queueing lines.
