Sevilla - modern and medieval city of Spain

Today's capital of the province of Andalucia has a large medieval center with marvelous churches and palaces. It is also famous for the Flamenco dance and the yearly Feria de Sevilla when the local families gather in suits and colourful dresses, typically using a horse-drawn carriage to the festival.
The city was founded by the Phoenicians, during Roman times then called Hispalis. With the Islamic conquest in 711, the capital of the Taifa was called Ishbiliyah by the new rulers. In 1248, the area came under control of the Crown of Castilia and took today's name of Sevilla.
After the discovery of Latin America by Christoper Colombus, the port of Sevilla was the trading hub for trans-atlantic trade. Precious metal from the colonies were put in the Torre del Oro, the other merchandise into warehouses between the Guadalquivir river and the city where merchants got rich by the unique trading opportunities. Later the port of trade moved to Cádiz as the river was silting. Modern buidlings were built for the Sevilla Expo '92 across the Guadalquivir, Calatrava's bridges, a Schindler elevator company and recently the modern Torre Sevilla with offices and shopping center, not to forget the wooden construction Las Setas which allows good panorama view of the old town. The official motto of the city is NO8DO coming from 'no me ha dejado' what King Alfonso X said when his son tried to push him away from the throne. The city of Sevilla always continued support for Alfonso X. The symbol NO8DO is found everywhere in town on buildings, documents or waterpipes.
