San Pedro de Atacama, Chile
This marvellous place in the Chilean desert (at 2'440 m) is a great to stay for a few days and serves as starting point for tours to the Andean high land with salinas, vulcanoes and canyons. There are roads connecting over the mountains to Argentina and to Bolivia. The houses of the traditional houses are made of Adobe, and as there are some natural springs, the region has been inhabited already by indigenous people thousands of years ago. During the day, it gets rather hot but at night the temperature goes down massively. In the higher areas, even below zero degrees Celsius. You can book hiking trips in San Pedro, the climbing upto the vulcano mountains though should be left to trained people with adequate adjustment to the height. |
